Pet Health Insurance

Pet health insurance is not a new concept but with the increase in pet care medical expenses it is something that has become very popular. No pet owner wants to be forced to put their pet 'to sleep' because they cannot afford medical treatment - after all, your pet is just like another member of your family.

Pet health insurance is similar to human medical insurance in that there are a number of different medical plans available and the exclusions and deductables will also vary. Coverage typically includes routine exams and vaccinations, as well as treatment for injuries and illnesses. (You should ask your veterinarian if your particular breed of pet is prone to any particular kind of medical problem. This will help you assess whether or not pet health insurance is something you should take out.)

How much does pet medical insurance cost? This will vary depending on which plan you take out and which company you decide to insure with. Pet Health Insurance underwriters assess their risk by factoring into consideration the age of the pet, breed, prior medical history (i.e. pre-existing conditions) and then with all that information set a premium. Typically however, pet insurance will range between $300 to $400 per year. (Seems like a lot? It is until your pet becomes ill and then veterinarian bills can soon reach well over $1,000.)
